This model is an adaptation of a Chanel, featuring the new length, the moulded hip line and the high waist. It is fashioned from imported net, printed in a dainty green and white design.A soft caped collar enhances the shoulder line.

The street fashion and hairstyles of everyday women in the 1930's from a unique film by Ivan Besse shot in the small South Dakota town of Britton in 1938
The Wall Street Crash had a huge impact on womens fashion in the 1930's.
Lots of women took up sewing and the Womens Institute became famous for it's sewing manuals and in particular those of the famous Mary Brooks Picken.
Everyone had a Singer sewing machine in their house as thrift was the name of the game. This film shows typical late 1930's fashion and hairstyles of normal everyday women. Hollywood fashion now had a huge influence. All the latest designs were draped over the female stars of the day like Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, and Myrna Loy It's interesting to see the extensive wearing of furs, capes, coats, stoles, and wraps of all kinds.
Hats had to be worn at a jaunty angle ! The famous Cloche was replaced by the Beret, Pill Box and
the newer brimmed hats, and the turban .Hangbags were of the beaded or mesh variety and personalised clutches were hugely popular with women. 1930's shoes were pumps, flats and ankle strap.
Dresses were made from easy washable fabric and synthetics were becoming more and more prevalent.

1930's Women's Hairstyles in the early part of the decade were all about waves !
The scary perming machines though were all the rage,
and no self respecting beauty salon could be seen without one.
Here in this charming vintage hair salon film, you see a good example of a side parting wave,
with hair pulled back in to curls and secured firmly with bobby pins.
To compliment these styles, hats had to be worn to the side slightly.
In fact, whatever the hairstyle, it had to compliment the latest hat fashion !
In early 1930's Fashion, the hairstyle icons would have generally all been Hollywood stars, such
as Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Merle Oberon etc.
I like the added feature of receiving a manicure, while sitting beneath the dryer.

The 1930's Songstress Annette Hanshaw featured here in this rare film.
She was a hugely popular jazz singer in the late 1920's and early 1930's
She was one of those women who was beautiful by just being herself. Hanshaw epitomised the era of
1930's dress style and glamour.
There has been recent revived interest in Annette thanks to the animated feature Sita sings the Blues,which includes performances by Annette.

The stunning early 1930's fashion went hand in hand with the Glamour of Hollywood.
Old reels like these look dated now, but they offered hope to millions of people.
Movie goers saw an alternate reality to the grim world they had just come in from.
